THANK YOU: A huge “thank you” to Jill Ogg, Crystal Marcengill, Wendy Meeks and Macey’s “Aunt Kim!” These ladies worked with the children last Friday to create the beautiful tye-died T-shirts that are going home today! Additionally, they all brought extra shirts for those without a shirt of their own. Please help your child remember to wear his or her shirt tomorrow for T day!

PTO Update: Our final 5k numbers are and it was a great success! We raised just over $4,500 in profit for this event! This event, coupled with our other successful projects, allowed us to make a large technology investment. It is with great pleasure that PTO presents the school with $7,000 towards the purchase of new computers!

We are in need of paper towel rolls for our number scrolls. Please send any you have any time this week. Thank you!

100 Book Challenge: Congratulations to Cooper and Charleigh for earning 300 steps! Peyton reached 200. Overall, our class has done a great job keeping up with the 100 BC books. However, as a school, we are missing many! Please take some time to look under beds, in closets, and in the car for any books that belong to the school. Thanks!

Language Arts & Science: We’ll be reading informational text and stories about plants. We started writing our own fairy tales last week, and we’ll finish them this week.

SPELLING: We’ll continue reviewing the high frequency word list this week. We’ll have a final class spelling bee on Thursday!

Math: We have started our Stepping up to Second Grade unit! We’re learning more about numbers greater than 120, and we’re trying to see how far we can write our numbers before the end of the year. 1,000 is our goal!

Thank you! Thank you to those of you who were able to serve as chaperones for our field trip to the Greenville Zoo! Everyone was willing to help out throughout the day, making it much easier for me! It was one of the best field trips, ever! The children were all very well behaved and enjoyed seeing the animals that we have been studying.

PTO News: Don’t forget to register for our Cardinal 5K or the 1 mile fun run! Every participant will receive a FREE 6 inch sub from Subway. Come out and walk then have a free healthy lunch!

Dress Code Reminders:
•Sleeveless shirts should have straps that are 3 fingers wide. Spaghetti straps are prohibited.
•Shorts should be longer than your fingertips when your arms are extended down. THIS INCLUDES ATHLETIC SHORTS.
•No flip flops are to be worn due to the safety of children while running outside. All shoes must have a strap on the back of the heel. NO HIGH HEELS are to be worn. We have seen several students twist ankles while wearing shoes with a raised heel and slick bottom.
•Leggings are not permitted unless they are covered by a skirt or shorts that are appropriate in length.
•Refrain from wearing extremely tight fitting clothing.

Consequences for Dress Code Violations:
First Offense: The teacher will verbally remind the child of the dress code as well as the parent.

•3/5~ Early Release Day AND Dr. Seuss celebration at the public library at 2:00
•3/3-3/14 - Box Top Blitz + Campbell's Soup Collection

Read Across America and Celebrate Dr. Seuss: On Friday we will conclude with “The Cat’s Colors.” We’re hoping everyone will wear red, black and white that day. Your child may also wear t-shirts, socks, or hats with Seuss characters on them. Girls may style their hair like a “whoo” from “Whooville” but not on top of their heads. There should be no costumes, face painting or pajamas. For more information about the events visit www.oconee.k12.sc.us/webpages/mfarmer or simply click on the Media Center link @our school’s homepage beginning March 1st.

100 Book Challenge: Please continue to read every day at home! At this point in the year, all of the students should be able to easily read 30 minutes, or 2 15 minute sessions, at home. Although most students are reading daily, there have been more students who are not earning steps at home. Beginning this week, we will use recess time to make up missed reading.

World Culture Day was a great success this year! Thank you to Octavia, Brock, Cooper and Adeline-Ashlyn for participating in the parade! If you haven’t already, please ask your child to tell you a little about what we have learned about Asia and Cambodia.

Thank you to our field trip chaperones: Jill Ogg, Crystal Marcengill, Anthony Wright and David Brucke! We appreciate your help supervising our students and keeping us safe.

Language Arts: After reading so much informational text during our study of Asia, we’re going to enjoy reading some Dr. Seuss books this week! Dr. Seuss’s 110th birthday was on March 2, and we will learn information about his life, in addition to reading his stories. We’ll be working with the spelling of rhyming words and non-sense words (like jump, bump and WUMP). We’ll be learning about alliteration, which is a string of words in a sentence that begin with the same letter sound (Beetles battle in bottles in a beetle bottle battle.) We’ll also learn about onomatopoeia, which is when words look like they sound (wow, pop, buzz, etc.)

In writing, we are working hard on editing for conventions such as punctuation, capital letters and spelling.

SPELLING: ** With the field trip and World Culture Day, we took our spelling test TODAY. It will go home tomorrow or Wednesday. Again, it’s important to know that these words are HIGH FREQUENCY words. We’re practicing them so that we can spell them correctly all the time... not just for a "test." This week’s words are:

ask, came, now, let, just, know, more, put, some, would

Please write each word three times for Monday night homework. For Tuesday and Wednesday, please write each word in its own sentence. For Thursday night, please do the spelling “boats,” also known as triangles. We’ll test on Friday.

Math: We’ll work on Topic 7, focusing on counting and number patterns to 120 . You can help at home by working on speed and memorization of basic facts and doubles facts. Thank you for your assistance in math homework.
