THANK YOU! Thank you to all of the parents who chaperoned on our field trip to the Carolina Foothills Heritage Fair! We had a fun time, and we made it back to school before the rain!
REMINDERS:
The “School Store” will be open for business before school on Wednesdays & Thursdays.
Thank you for checking your child’s calendar & green Take Home Folder every day.
Please help your child remember to wear sneakers on our PE days, Mondays & Wednesdays. Our library day is Friday.
Please also remember to send a small, healthy snack that can be quickly and independently eaten in the mornings.
Thanks for remembering to send all money to school in an envelope, clearly labeled with your child’s name, my name, and what the money is for.

Homework: MATH HOMEWORK BEGINS THIS WEEK! (Look for more information in the Math section of the newsletter.) For this week, please add the following first grade high-frequency words:
are, from, here, just, now, want, went, what, who, with

If your child can easily recognize them for reading, go ahead and begin practicing the spelling of these words. Our main goal now is for the children to be able to read them at first sight. Once your child has mastered some of the older words, work on spelling.
Please continue to review the K words: a, and, away, big, blue, can, cat, come, dad, dog, down, find, for, funny, go, help, I, in, is, it, jump, little, look, make, me, mom, my, not, one, play, red, run, said, see, the, three, to, two, up, we, yellow, you and the FIRST GRADE WORDS all, eat, got, has, have, like, of, put, was, will, am, are, can’t, get, not, on, said, that, this, too

Continue to read daily for at least 15 minutes. Your child will have at least 2 books per night. I’m noticing lots of students reading their library books, too. On Fridays, it is “optional” to bring home books, and everyone’s been choosing fun books for the weekends!

Language Arts: We are working on spelling our high frequency words correctly at all times, as well as using beginning, middle, and ending sounds of words. Our sentences should all have correct spacing between words, and include periods at the end. We are continuing to focus on using our fingers to point to the words as we read, using the pictures for clues, and “getting our mouths ready” as we face unknown words. We’re noticing patterns and rhyming words (word families) in our reading. We are comparing and contrasting things by noting similarities and differences. We are wrapping up our unit on THE FARM, reading fiction & non fiction books together.

Math: The first grade is beginning the M&M MATH MASTERS program this week. We’re working on adding with 100% accuracy, facts beginning with +0, +1, and +2. We’ve been working on strategies to use instead of relying on our fingers. The program works on all addition facts, leading up to 10+10. Look form more information in future newsletters.

Also, beginning this week, we will have MATH HOMEWORK at least 3 days a week. Be sure to look in your child’s RETURN TO SCHOOL side of the take home folder.

We’re reviewing even & odd numbers. We’re working on using the number line for addition & subtraction, and story problems for addition & subtraction. We’ve been working on telling time to the half hour, discussing the placement of both hands and looking at digital clocks, too. We’ve been working on sums that are equal to 10. We’re continuing to use the class number grid, the thermometer, and DIMES, nickels & pennies. We’re reviewing counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s up to 50 and higher.

Science & Social Studies: We will continue learning about living and nonliving things. We’re discussing products that come from farms and using our Earth’s resources. We’ve learned more about the life cycle of plants, especially corn and pumpkins.
