MAP TESTING: We have finished the Reading section, and we will take the Math portions on Tuesday and Thursday this week. Thank you in advance for making sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast! When testing is complete, I will begin to schedule conferences.

FROM THE LIBRARY: Don't forget to check the Media Center's website at http://www.oconee.k12.sc.us/webpages/mfarmer/ to see more information about the upcoming Book Fair during this month and Bring a Loved One to Lunch events.

TAKE HOME READERS/100 Book Challenge: Please set a timer for 15 minutes as your child reads. Thank you for your assistance as we have started earning “steps” for our reading at home! If you continue to have questions, please let me know. We have been logging our steps in class for awhile, so the children do know what to do. Just remember, write only one title to represent the 15 minute timeframe. In fact, the children can fill out all the information, and you just initial in the “coaches” box.

Language Arts: We are reading books by Eric Carle, as well as nominees for the SC Children’s Book Award. We’ll use these books as models to write stories of our own! Our reading AND our writing have come such a long way! I look forward to sharing some assessments and writing samples with you when we begin our conferences.

We’re learning about story elements, such as characters, settings, problems and solutions of books. We are continuing to focus on vowel “teams,” such as ea, ai, and oa, as well as “r-controlled” vowel sounds (ar, er, ir and ur). We are reading and spelling BLENDS, such as sn, sl, pr, cl, st, etc. We are learning more about compound words and contractions, such as can’t, I’ll, I’m, isn’t, etc.

In writing, we are focusing on writing several sentences on one topic. We’re continuing to work on spelling basic high frequency words correctly. We are using our dictionaries. We’re including finger spaces in between the words as we write. We are working on writing complete sentences, with capital letters at the beginning and a period or question mark at the end.

MATH: We’ll continue working with place value (tens and ones) with base-10 blocks. We will continue “Rocket Math” this week, focusing on speed and memorization of addition facts.

Please continue reviewing counting combinations of coins, adding with speed and accuracy, and telling time to the hour and half-hour.
