NEEDED: We are collecting paper towel rolls for a math project and empty tissue boxes, any size, for Valentine’s Day. Thank you for sending in these items for us to reuse in class! We would also appreciate any donations of tissues and hand sanitizer, if you have any extra. Thank you!
PTO News: Thank you for supporting our PTO with Box Tops, Campbell Soup Labels for Education and Coke bottle caps. The Box Top Blitz continues through this month! OUR CLASS WAS IN THE LEAD ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON!
Tornado Safety Poster Contest: Oconee County Emergency Services is sponsoring its annual Tornado Safety Poster Contest. The contest is open to all students in grades one through six in any Oconee County school. There will be winners and runners-up at each grade level and a grand prize winner. Winners from each grade level will be chosen by a committee of judges during the period of February 13-17, 2012. Schools with winners will be notified during Severe Weather Awareness Week (March 4-10, 2012) and certificates and cash prizes will be awarded in March. Entries should be submitted on standard poster paper (22” x 28”). The student’s name, grade level and school name should be clearly printed in ink on the back of the poster for easy identification. Only one entry per student and no joint entries (by more than one person) will be accepted. Entries will not only be judged on the artistic aspect, but must also emphasize the theme of “Tornado Safety” by depicting proper protective actions. Each entry will be judged on originality, message, impact, and effort.
100 Book Challenge: We’ve had more children reach their 100th steps for 25 hours of reading! CONGRATULATIONS to Jaxton! Is your child reading for 30 minutes each day at home? Thank you for continuing to review the skills and strategies on the cards.
HOORAY! Once again, our class has returned 100% of all of our 100 BC books!
Language Arts: We will read more stories by Ezra Jack Keats, the author of The Snowy Day. It is 50 years old this year! We’re learning more about contractions and compound words and unusual vowel sounds. We are focusing on THINKING more about our reading before, during, and after we read. We’re learning how to tell the difference between fiction and non-fiction and to give evidence from our books to support our decision. We’ve been reading BIOGRAPHIES. Ask your child to tell you what they are! And finally, we are really focusing on CONVENTIONS in our writing: spelling, capitalization, punctuation, spacing and handwriting.
Math: We are working on counting combinations of coins, as well as representing amounts in a variety of ways. We’re reviewing telling time to the half hour and adding with speed and accuracy.
Social Studies: We have studied the contributions that Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks have made to our country. We will continue to read biographies and compare timelines of people’s lives.
