Read Across America and Celebrate Dr. Seuss: On Friday we will conclude with “The Cat’s Colors.” We’re hoping everyone will wear red, black and white that day. Your child may also wear t-shirts, socks, or hats with Seuss characters on them. Girls may style their hair like a “whoo” from “Whooville” but not on top of their heads. There should be no costumes, face painting or pajamas. For more information about the events visit www.oconee.k12.sc.us/webpages/mfarmer or simply click on the Media Center link @our school’s homepage beginning March 1st.

100 Book Challenge: Please continue to read every day at home! At this point in the year, all of the students should be able to easily read 30 minutes, or 2 15 minute sessions, at home. Although most students are reading daily, there have been more students who are not earning steps at home. Beginning this week, we will use recess time to make up missed reading.

World Culture Day was a great success this year! Thank you to Octavia, Brock, Cooper and Adeline-Ashlyn for participating in the parade! If you haven’t already, please ask your child to tell you a little about what we have learned about Asia and Cambodia.

Thank you to our field trip chaperones: Jill Ogg, Crystal Marcengill, Anthony Wright and David Brucke! We appreciate your help supervising our students and keeping us safe.

Language Arts: After reading so much informational text during our study of Asia, we’re going to enjoy reading some Dr. Seuss books this week! Dr. Seuss’s 110th birthday was on March 2, and we will learn information about his life, in addition to reading his stories. We’ll be working with the spelling of rhyming words and non-sense words (like jump, bump and WUMP). We’ll be learning about alliteration, which is a string of words in a sentence that begin with the same letter sound (Beetles battle in bottles in a beetle bottle battle.) We’ll also learn about onomatopoeia, which is when words look like they sound (wow, pop, buzz, etc.)

In writing, we are working hard on editing for conventions such as punctuation, capital letters and spelling.

SPELLING: ** With the field trip and World Culture Day, we took our spelling test TODAY. It will go home tomorrow or Wednesday. Again, it’s important to know that these words are HIGH FREQUENCY words. We’re practicing them so that we can spell them correctly all the time... not just for a "test." This week’s words are:

ask, came, now, let, just, know, more, put, some, would

Please write each word three times for Monday night homework. For Tuesday and Wednesday, please write each word in its own sentence. For Thursday night, please do the spelling “boats,” also known as triangles. We’ll test on Friday.

Math: We’ll work on Topic 7, focusing on counting and number patterns to 120 . You can help at home by working on speed and memorization of basic facts and doubles facts. Thank you for your assistance in math homework.
